Graham Strahle, Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide, Adelaide,  Australia

Brian Coghlan Memorial Lecture 2024: Wagner and the Critics

St Andrew’s Church Hall 43 Church Terrace, Walkerville, SA, Australia.
The Lecture will start at 2:30 pm and will be followed by afternoon tea.

Musical criticism has probably existed for as long as anyone has made musical sounds, and by the 19th century, when Richard Wagner was creating his music-dramas, it was an accepted part of European intellectual life. Richard himself was also a music critic. And his own works were, from the beginning, and continue to be, the subject of much comment and criticism.

There have been innumerable reports, articles, books and theses written about the Master, his music, ideas, and opinions. Local critic, musicologist and author Dr. Graham Strahle has chosen to speak about some of the more prominent of Richard Wagner’s critics, especially Eduard Hanslick and George Bernard Shaw.

A graduate of the Elder Conservatorium, where he occasionally still teaches, Dr. Strahle did post-doctoral studies in the U.K. where his: An Early Music Dictionary: musical terms from British Sources 1500-1740 was published by Cambridge University Press. He has taught at the Universities of New England and Queensland, but now works mainly as a music critic and journalist. He also performs regularly on the viola da gamba.
